Microsoft Access Database: Why I Don't Use Microsoft Access Macros

Microsoft Access Database: Why I Don’t Use Microsoft Access Macros

I’m often asked about Microsoft Access Macros and Access Modules (VBA) and why we have two ways to program and automate an Access design database application.

They both provide a way to automate your database but are very different from each other indeed when designing and applying these objects.

It’s more of an historical answer and simply put it was the first Continue reading “Microsoft Access Database: Why I Don't Use Microsoft Access Macros”

Microsoft Access Database: Working with Application Parts As Access 2010 Templates

Microsoft Access Database: Working with Application Parts As Access 2010 Templates

New to Microsoft Access 2010 is the way you now build Access 2010 templates using what is generally known as Application Parts.

This video tutorial (under 3 minutes long) will quickly demonstrate what this new feature is and where you manage Application parts within Microsoft Access 2010.

Microsoft Access Database: Looking For Microsoft Access Application Programmer?

Microsoft Access Database: Looking For Microsoft Access Application Programmer?

If your custom built Microsoft Access database application is not providing the service or richness you are after then an Access  application programmer (using Access VBA) maybe the route you nee to take adding value to your business.

access application programmerThere are plenty of Access VBA programmers around but how do you go about pre-qualifying the skills of such an Access application programmer?

The keyword for me is ‘experience‘ and not having just a shiny certificate from Microsoft!

Access VBA programmers not only need to provide just a knowledge of Visual Basic (for Application) as the language but they also need to demonstrate their worth with scoping, designing through to testing and deploying and become an all-rounder in project management too.

Some may feel this requires Continue reading “Microsoft Access Database: Looking For Microsoft Access Application Programmer?”

Microsoft Access Database: Understanding Microsoft Access Relationships And Foreign Keys

Understanding Microsoft Access Relationships And Foreign Keys

This video tutorial (less than 2 minutes) explains the very basics of what Microsoft Access relationships are focusing on the foreign key and where it can be used.

Microsoft Access Database – My Thoughts About Microsoft Access Relationships With Foreign Keys

Using the foreign key can be used in several ways not just as the video tutorial demonstrated. It’s also used to mark any field in a table to be indexed for your Access formula query calculations and setting criteria too.

When dealing with Microsoft Access relationships, you are now applying indexing too which speeds up your queries and reports. The foreign key is indexed as ‘Duplicates OK‘ in the property settings from the design view of an Access table.

Microsoft Access Database: Advanced Parameter Query In Microsoft Access

Microsoft Access Database: Advanced Parameter Query In Microsoft Access

The following two minute video demonstrates the advanced parameter query in Microsoft Access using a text (string) data type as the example by extending the criteria parameters.

Microsoft Access Database: Advanced Parameter Query In Microsoft Access

The narrator doesn’t really expand too much how advanced this can really get when using the advanced parameter query in Microsoft Access but it puts the foundation down for using the more flexible criteria for a string value by using the & operator (which means concatenate).

Microsoft Access Database Tutorial: Two more things to say here!

I apologise for the dryness of the narrators delivery (it’s only 2 minutes!) and to explain the definition of the word ‘concatenate‘ meaning ‘the joining of...’. Now you can continue to experiment with an advanced parameter query in Microsoft Access.

Microsoft Access Database Tutorial: Exporting & Importing Microsoft Access VBA Modules

First of all, a big thank you to one of my subscribers (Bob) for giving me the idea and inspiration to mention a little about how to manage Microsoft Access VBA modules by importing and exporting files between VBA projects in Microsoft Access (and other Office applications).microsoft access vba export moduleAccess VBA programmers will experience a little deja-vu when wanting to re-use code and without having to physically open to copy VBA code and then close Access databases, you can simply learn to build a library of code Continue reading “Microsoft Access Database: Exporting, Importing Microsoft Access VBA Modules”

Microsoft Access Database Tutorial – My Comments

I think the ‘Dummies’ series are fantastic and an enjoyable experience to read making it very easy to understand Microsoft Access databases and their important objects namely tables, queries, forms and reports.

I recommend starting with the Access 2010 Crosstab Query Wizard tool which is available to all versions and then review the design area and get the best of both and not having to waste time starting from a blank Microsoft Access Query canvas.
